Follow the drums
You hear a matsuri before you see it: taiko drums rolling down a shopping street, a chant rising and falling as a mikoshi — a portable shrine carried on the shoulders of forty neighbors — sways past the convenience store. Summer festivals are Japan's neighborhoods at their warmest, and they're free. Check the dates with one phrase: matsuri wa itsu desu ka.
The stall economy
Festival food stalls (yatai) run on pointing and small bills, which makes them the lowest-pressure Japanese practice on Earth. Kakigoori — shaved ice drowned in syrup — is the classic order; takoyaki and yakisoba fight for second place. Order with hitotsu kudasai ('one, please'), pay in coins, eat standing up. Then play kingyo sukui, the goldfish-scooping game that has separated children from their pocket money for two hundred years.
Fireworks deserve planning
Hanabi taikai — fireworks festivals — are not casual events. Locals claim riverbank spots with picnic sheets hours ahead, dressed in yukata, convenience-store drinks in hand. Ask hanabi wa nanji kara desu ka ('what time do the fireworks start?'), arrive early, and stay for the finale: Japanese shows build to single enormous bursts that light the whole sky. The collective gasp is the point.
